The Trip-Finder, January 1998 Cameroon Mountain-biking the Western Highlands The Route: Self-supported mountain-biking across the shoulders of 13,541-foot Mount Cameroon and the Bamileke Highlands. Trip lasts 15 days. When to go: November to December Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous Travel advisory: This trip is more demanding than a cursory glance at the itinerary might suggest; it’s quite difficult to ride up to 48 miles per day on a fat-tired bike with 20- to 25-pound panniers. High/low points: Slicing into a juicy 25¢ pineapple during a break along the high ridges of northwest Cameroon. Struggling to strap onto your bike the ceremonial chicken presented to you during a visit to His Majesty the Fon of Nso. Copyright 1998, Outside magazine |
