For an off-the-beaten-path surfing sojourn, it doesn’t get much better than Hotel Escondido, a luxury hideaway in the lively Oaxaca port town of Puerto Escondido.
Opened in 2013 by Grupo Habita—Mexico’s answer to the hipper-than-thou Ace Hotel chain—this rustic surf lodge sits on a private patch of cacti-lined beach skimming the Pacific Ocean. You’re staying in one of 16 thatched-roof bungalows, each decked out with a king or queen-size bed, simple yet chic décor, and a private plunge pool.
During the day, attempt to tame the famous Mexican Pipeline, which breaks—epically—at Zicatela Beach. At night, hit the bars and clubs of El Adoquin, a commercial node that’s pedestrian-only come evening. When you’re officially reeling from all that mezcal (the official drink of Oaxaca), take a 15-minute taxi ride back to your cabana at the hotel.

Other highlights on the property include a 50-meter infinity pool overlooking the ocean, a basement lounge where guests can play DJ, and a superb restaurant cooking up local treats such as moles and whole roasted fish. There’s a spa, too, which your wave-battered body will certainly appreciate.
