The Trip-Finder, January 1998 Italy Hiking the Dolomites The Route: Trekking through the green meadows and soaring spires of white rock that line one of Europe’s best trail systems. Overnights during the five- to 11-day trips are in village inns and remote but cozy rifugios. When to go: June to September Difficulty: Moderate Travel advisory: Some of the outfitters use the notorious via ferrata, or iron trails, a precarious, vertigo-inspiring network of ladders, cables, and footpegs that traverse particularly steep sections of rock — an ordeal for those with a fear of heights. High/low points: Watching a crashing thunderstorm from a rifugio so high in the mountains that you’re looking down on the storm clouds. If you’re longing for unpeopled vistas, the Dolomites in the summer is not the place to be. Copyright 1998, Outside magazine |
