Travel Guide, Winter 1995-1996
Middle East: The Peace Dividend By Todd Balf A year or two ago, adventure travel in the Middle East was virtually nonexistent, but the ongoing peace process has changed all that. Wilderness Travel’s 21-day hike through Israel’s hills of Galilee and Jordan’s deserts includes overnight stays in a kibbutz, a Druze home, and a Bedouin tent. Departures for 1995-96 are on October 14, March 21, and April 11; price is $3,595; call 800-368-2794. Mountain Travel-Sobek offers a new 14-day journey to Jordan and Syria ($2,250 per person; March 2, 1996; 800-227-2384), including a three-day camel trek and visits to Petra and Palmyra, a second-century oasis on the caravan route to the Mediterranean. Israel-based outfitter Tracks (011-972-3-691-6103) has six new hiking and mountain biking trips in Israel ($80-$150 per person per day). They also offer five-to seven-day extensions for trekking and/or biking in Jordan. |
