The Trip-Finder, January 1998 Peru Trekking Colca Canyon The Route: A donkey-supported trip from Huambo into a vast, arid, 10,600-foot-deep canyon, with stops at remote Indian villages and waterfalls, plus a drive over the 14,000-foot Altiplano. The trip takes 11 days. When to go: May to October Difficulty: Moderate Travel advisory: If possible, avoid the October trip; biting blackflies in the canyon can be voracious at that time of year. High/low points: Watching an Andean condor, the world’s largest bird, soar over this, the world’s deepest canyon. Grunting up 6,000 hot and relentless vertical feet on the last day’s trek.
