Suggested rivers for a new rafting enthusiast By Amy Marr Question: I’ve recently become interested in whitewater rafting. Have done the Gauley in West Virginia, which was exciting. Now I’m looking for other sites with Class III and up whitewater, in the states and Canada. Any suggestions? Bill Bischoff New York, New York Adventure Adviser: Cataract Canyon in Utah should be high on your list. It’s a 100-mile trip, capped by 18 thrilling miles of rapids through the namesake gorge. You’ll put in near Moab, then drift by some truly eerie rock formations and Anasazi ruins. Most trips are five-days long, and numerous companies run the Cataract. Call the Canyonlands National Park office in Moab for a complete list of outfitters (801-259-7164). As for Canada, the Magpie in Quebec and the Clearwater in Saskatchewan are two excellent choices. The Magpie is still relatively new—the Class IV pool-and-drop river has only been run commercially for six years. It’s also isolated; you’ve got to take a floatplane to access the put-in. Call Earth River Expeditions (800-643-2784) for details. Also punctuated with many Class IV rapids, the Clearwater cuts through extremely deep and narrow canyons.
