Most of us run with our smartphones. In years past, we’ve had to carry them in hydration vests, belts, arm bands, and awkward apparel pockets. More recently, hip pockets on short and long tights have held our phones securely and accessibly. But there’s a somewhat new trend in women’s running apparel that’s making carrying a phone easier and more comfortable than ever: sports bras with pockets.
Phone pockets on sports bras have revolutionized how I carry my phone. It’s one of those inventions that makes you wonder why no one figured it out sooner. The greatest benefit to the trend is that it leverages the very nature of a sports bra: bras are compressive and keep things from bouncing, so your phone is held close to the body and moves minimally.
Sports bras with the pocket on the front work fairly well, and the phone is easy to access (especially for those with tight shoulders, like me). Bras that carry phones in the side pockets work, too. But I’ve found that a pocket on the upper middle back of a sports bra secures a phone better, balanced close to the center of my body, with less bounce, than carrying it virtually any other place on the body—it’s a true gamechanger.
Another benefit to having phone pockets on sports bras is that no matter what else you’re wearing, you always have a place to put your phone. Your apparel doesn’t need a pocket, and you don’t have to carry a pack or accessory of any sort. You’re always wearing a sports bra, so why not make it one that has a convenient and unobtrusive phone pocket?
Here are my favorites:

This sports bra with a phone pocket has been a favorite of mine for a few years. It’s become my go-to travel bra because, apart from the incognito phone pocket on the upper middle back, it’s a simple, comfortable, effective running bra, whether I stash my phone in it or not. The thin shoulder straps work with any tank top, but they don’t always feel great underneath pack straps, so I usually wear a different sports bra for mountain adventures.

This sports bra also works great whether I’m using the phone pocket or not. It’s made from a ridiculously luxurious-feeling Italian blend of nylon and elastane that is soft against the skin while also supportive. Its two-layer construction is open at the center top of the bra’s frontside, allowing me to stash my phone on my chest. While that isn’t as comfortable as carrying it on my back, I appreciate how easy it is to access, and that I don’t have to strain my tight shoulders to reach it.

This longer-cut bra can be worn on its own if you’re into that look. The pocket on the upper middle back keeps the phone from bouncing, can be accessed mid-run, and is lined with a waterproof material to keep sweat out. Two stretchy pockets on the sides of this bra let you carry additional items, like a gel or two, making you self-sufficient on a long training run or race day.

This sports bra from Brooks features three pockets—one on the upper midback meant for a phone, and two on the sides. The two side pockets are too small for a phone, but they can carry small items like gels or a key. A high-cut neckline adds modesty and support, and the pads are removable. With band and cup sizes from 30A/B to 40DD/E, you can find a perfect fit.

Unlike the Rabbit Strappy Pocket Bra’s slim straps, this supportive Rabbit sports bra’s thicker shoulder straps lay flat and comfortably under a pack. When a pack isn’t needed, the sleek pocket at midback holds a phone securely with virtually no bounce. This sports bra is lined with a high-polyester-content mesh for breathability and quick drying, which is especially appreciated because the thicker straps cover more skin.
