Trail Karma: The Golden Road

Explore and donate to this high-clearance Maine trail

The Golden Road is a private logging road in northern Maine, stretching from Millinocket to the Canadian border. Built in the 1970s for transporting timber, it now serves as a gateway to Maine’s North Woods, providing access to activities like fishing, hiking, hunting, and whitewater rafting. While partly paved, most of the road is gravel, requiring caution due to rough conditions and active logging trucks. The route offers stunning wilderness views, including Mount Katahdin, but lacks amenities like gas stations or cell service, so travelers must prepare accordingly.
