Peter Sagan won the UCI World Road Cycling Championships on Sunday.
On Sunday, Slovakian cyclist Peter Sagan won the UCI World Road Cycling Championships in Richmond, Virginia, according to the Washington Post.
“I gave all the energy I had,” Sagan told reporters, according to VeloNews. “I was hoping for the last cobblestone climb, and from there it was just gas it to the finish.”
Australian rider Michael Matthews took silver; Lithuanian Ramunas Navardauskas took bronze. Though Matthews was starting to close the gap in the straightaway sprint to the finish, Sagan had a big enough lead to hold him and the other riders off.
“The way Sagan descends, not many people can follow,” said Matthews, according to VeloNews.
