Of the four distances that make up the Ladakh Marathon, the Khardung La Challenge stands out above the others—it's the highest ultramarathon in the world. The 72-kilometer event begins at an elevation of 13,042 feet and peaks at one of highest mountain passes in the world, Khardung La, 17,618 feet above sea level. Every year, organizers restrict the ultra to 150 runners who are willing to push themselves to the extreme in the beautiful yet brutal Karakoram mountain range.
