This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on September 3, 1964, the federal law is a milestone in conservation and has been used to preserve over 100 million acres of wilderness. This special segment of This American Land, produced in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts, takes a look at how the Wilderness Act came to be, and why it’s so important.
